Ngern Tidlor Mutually Creates a Sustainable Society

“Sustainability” has become a buzzword these past few years as organizations increasingly realize the importance of responsibly exploiting the world’s resources, instead of only seeking profits. Many organizations continue to innovate and contribute new ideas about sustainability from their perspective.

At Ngern Tidlor, sustainability is not just a trend; it is a key principle we have always adhered to. Because in its perspective, sustainability is the purpose to uplifting quality of life for customers and society at large, so they may continue to build their livelihoods and never need to return to us. We adhere to this concept in developing products and services that drive the organization toward the future.

Strategy: A Reflection of Purpose.

Ngern Tidlor has implemented various strategies that drive the organization towards its sustainability goals as recognized by the Center for Impact Investing and Practice (CIIP), established by Temasek Trust as a model organization for conducting business under the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through five social dimensions; Reduce Poverty and Inequalities, Promote Quality Education, Promote Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Develop Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

At Ngern Tidlor, creating business success alongside social sustainability was not an overnight success nor trendy marketing ploy, but emerged from the foundational goals of our business: To create financial opportunities for Thai society, especially people in low-income or self-employed work with irregular income sources and who are unable to access financial resources within the traditional system (i.e. underbanked). Ngern Tidlor focuses on creating and promoting opportunities for all people in society to have financial knowledge equally and inclusively as the company believes that having a solid financial background enables opportunities to people to have sustainable quality of life.

Ngern Tidlor encourages its people to participate in volunteer activities that provide financial knowledge to communities and groups that have fewer opportunities. Ngern Tidlor also continuously organizes and promotes activities for its employees to participate in environmental conservation.

Certainly, to have received acknowledgement for these efforts in Asia has made every single NTLer proud and keep them striving to create a more sustainable society together.

Seek Inspiration from 'Similar Organizations' to Energize Towards Goal Achievement

As a concept of creating a sustainable society built from our organizational strategy, the NTL Leadership Workshop, a regular brainstorming activity for leaders to discuss, align and set the overall direction so that everyone could work towards a same shared goal, has been valued and become a core activity that Ngern Tidlor consistently pays attention to. Ngern Tidlor continues to learn from other world-class organizations through books (e.g. writings on Starbucks, Amazon, and Lego) and from actual site visits (e.g. Alibaba, Disney, Zappos, etc.). This year's NTL Leadership Workshop 2022 activity was held at Doi Tung, a Thai organization with a world-class concept and many similarities to Ngern Tidlor, including its intention to provide opportunities for people to have a sustainable and higher quality of life, its organizational goals of creating strategies from existing strengths, nurturing a culture that dares to think, dares to try, and never stops inventing and developing.

Both Ngern Tidlor and Doi Tung are organizations that emerged from negative images. Ngern Tidlor was formerly viewed as a “gray area” business with high interest rates but has transformed into an organization that gives people opportunity to access fair and transparent funding sources and creates opportunities for a better quality of life.

On the other hand, Doi Tung was founded to address the problems of forest encroachment and opium cultivation but has evolved into an organization that provides opportunities for villagers to create quality products and services for the world.

At the visit to Doi Tung, NTL leaders had the opportunity to build a check dam together to help slow the water and retain moisture in the forest soil. This also reduces the problem of forest fires that commonly occur in the dry season.

All the participants enjoyed the study visit to Doi Tung and provided feedback on this valuable experience filled with unexpected inspiration.

“I enjoyed the story of Doi Tung, how there was a goal and clear intentions to help the villagers so they may help themselves. I think that every organization should be like this. We have the same concept at Ngern Tidlor.”- Viriyapa Tanarapcharoen, Operations Analyst, Operations.

“Doi Tung not only produces results but also clear measurements which enable visualization and further improvement. This motivates us to improve the work we are responsible for.”- Benchawan Phirunrungrueang, Training Specialist, Financial Education.

“From the outside, we only know Doi Tung as a brand of tea and coffee. I’m impressed with what they do for villagers, communities and society.”- Worapol Thipmaneemongkol, UI Designer, Digital Transformation.

“The stories about Doi Tung and lessons on intent encouraged us to clearly visualize our goals, that our small actions are combined into something big. When we have a clear and consistent understanding of team and organizational goals, we don’t look to blame others, but instead we find ways to improve together.”- Sudarat Changdang, Fraud Monitoring Officer, Fraud.

From this workshop, NTLers were able to learn together from another organization that fostered similar goals and methods. All participants were able to reflect on their own intentions and encourage their colleagues with positive energy, understand clear overall directions of company towards future sustainability goals.
